Telling Time in German

There are three different ways to tell time in German. You can say: "Three hours twenty." or "Twenty past three." or "Twenty on the way to four." But the clearest way to say it is by stating the hour followed by the minutes ("Three hours twenty").

The twenty-four hour system for telling the time is often used, especially for airports and railroads. After 12 (noon) you will say:

1 p.m. = dreizehn Uhr (hour 13)
2 p.m. = vierzehn Uhr (14)
3 p.m. = fünfzehn Uhr (15)
4 p.m. = sechzehn Uhr (16)
5 p.m. = siebzehn Uhr (17)
6 p.m. = achtzehn Uhr (18)
7 p.m. = neunzehn Uhr (19)
8 p.m. = zwanzig Uhr (20)
9 p.m. = einundzwanzig Uhr (21)
10 p.m. = zweiundzwanzig Uhr (22)
11 p.m. = dreiundzwanzig Uhr (23)
12 (midnight) = vierundzwanzig Uhr (hour 24)
morning = der Morgen
afternoon = der Nachmittag (e)
evening = der Abend (e)
